Using your plan

Who carries CareFirst

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is the Blue Cross company for Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia. Many people who live in Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, or Prince William but work in DC or Maryland carry a CareFirst card through their employer, and so do federal employees on the Blue Cross Federal Employee Program, which CareFirst administers for care in this region.

Your card will say CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, CareFirst BlueChoice, or Blue Cross Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan. Before your first appointment, call the member services number on the card, confirm your outpatient mental health benefit, and ask whether a referral is needed. BlueChoice HMO plans usually need a referral from your primary care provider; PPO plans and FEP usually do not. This practice also verifies your eligibility before your visit.
