Understanding Perinatal Mental Health

Perinatal mental health refers to mental health care during the period spanning pregnancy through the first year after birth. This is a time of significant hormonal, neurological, and life change - and it is one of the highest-risk periods for the onset or recurrence of depression, anxiety, OCD, and other conditions.

Depression and anxiety during pregnancy are at least as common as postpartum conditions, but they receive far less attention. Many people feel pressure to appear happy and grateful during pregnancy, making it harder to speak up about struggling. Untreated prenatal mental health conditions can affect both the parent and fetal development - which makes getting care a meaningful act of care for everyone.

Perinatal care also includes support for those who have experienced pregnancy loss, fertility challenges, or traumatic births.

How I can help

Medication decisions during pregnancy and breastfeeding require careful, individualized thinking - weighing risks of treatment against risks of untreated illness. I take this responsibility seriously and will walk you through the evidence clearly, without fear or pressure, so you can make informed decisions that feel right for you and your family.

I also offer supportive therapy and psychoeducation throughout the perinatal period. Telehealth is ideal for prenatal and postpartum care - you can access support from home, without the added stress of travel. All sessions available in English and Tiếng Việt.
