Anxiety care

Very treatable. Rarely evaluated properly.

Anxiety is not a personality trait and not a failure of willpower. It is a nervous system stuck on high alert, and it costs you sleep, focus, patience, and the ability to enjoy things that should be enjoyable. Generalized anxiety disorder means worry that spreads across many areas of life and will not switch off. Social anxiety is the fear of being judged, which quietly shrinks a career. Health anxiety turns every ordinary sensation into a question. Many Virginia adults arrive here after a normal cardiology workup or a trip to the emergency room, having been told that nothing is wrong, which is true medically and unhelpful practically.

The first appointment is a full 60 minutes, because the useful question is not whether you feel anxious. It is what is generating the anxiety. That means taking a complete history and looking honestly at the things that imitate or amplify anxiety: thyroid problems, sleep loss and insomnia, caffeine and alcohol, ADHD, OCD, past trauma, perimenopause, and medications you are already taking. Depression is present in a large share of anxiety cases, and missing it means treating half the problem. Validated screening tools such as the GAD-7 help track change over time, but they are a thermometer, not a diagnosis.

Treatment is built with you rather than handed to you. SSRIs and SNRIs are first line and usually take four to six weeks to show their real effect, which is why follow up matters more than the initial prescription. Buspirone, hydroxyzine, and beta blockers for situational performance anxiety all have a place. Benzodiazepines are prescribed rarely and carefully, and Alice will tell you plainly why. Supportive therapy and psychoeducation are part of every visit, and she will coordinate with your therapist if you have one. Care is in person at the Fairfax office in the Merrifield area, with free parking, or by secure telehealth anywhere in Virginia, in English or Tiếng Việt.

Generalized anxiety (GAD)

Worry that jumps from topic to topic, muscle tension, and a mind that will not go quiet at 2 AM.

Social & performance anxiety

Dread before meetings, presentations, and calls. Often treatable with a targeted plan rather than lifelong avoidance.

Health anxiety & body symptoms

Chest tightness, stomach trouble, and dizziness with a clean medical workup. Real symptoms, treatable cause.

Anxiety with ADHD, insomnia, or depression

Anxiety rarely travels alone. The evaluation sorts out which condition is driving which symptom.

Quick answers

Anxiety questions from Virginia patients

How soon can I be seen for anxiety in Virginia?

New patients are typically scheduled within one to two weeks. No referral is needed and you can book directly online. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern.

What happens at the first anxiety appointment?

It is a full 60 minutes. Alice takes a complete psychiatric and medical history, asks how anxiety affects your sleep, work, and relationships, reviews anything you have already tried, and screens for conditions that commonly travel with anxiety such as depression, ADHD, OCD, trauma, and insomnia. You leave with a working diagnosis and a plan you helped build.

Which anxiety medications do you prescribe?

SSRIs and SNRIs are first line and usually take four to six weeks to reach their real effect. Buspirone, hydroxyzine, and beta blockers for situational performance anxiety are also options depending on your history. Nobody can promise a specific result in advance, so the plan is adjusted at follow up based on how you actually respond.

Do you prescribe benzodiazepines like Xanax?

Rarely, and with clear limits. Benzodiazepines work fast but carry real risks of tolerance, dependence, and rebound anxiety, and they can make long term treatment harder. The practice does not provide long term daily benzodiazepine management or benzodiazepine tapering, so new patients taking a benzodiazepine daily or long term cannot be accepted; occasional, as-needed use may be considered on an individual basis.

Can anxiety be treated entirely by telehealth in Virginia?

Yes. Evaluation, medication management, and follow up all transfer well to secure video. Alice is licensed in Virginia only, so you need to be physically located in Virginia at the time of your visit, whether that is Richmond, Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, Roanoke, or Northern Virginia. She treats adults 18 to 65.

Do you take insurance for anxiety treatment?

Yes. Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Medicare, and Medicaid are accepted. Self pay rates are $400 for the 60 minute initial visit and $200 for a 30 minute follow up.

Where is the in person office, and is there parking?

3060 Williams Drive, Suite 300, Fairfax, VA 22031, in the Merrifield area. Parking is free. In person and telehealth visits can be mixed depending on what works for your schedule.
