About this practice

Being understood should not require a translator.

Portland has one of the most established Vietnamese communities on the West Coast, and almost no Vietnamese-speaking psychiatric prescribers to serve it. What usually happens instead is an interpreter on a phone line, or an adult child pulled out of work to translate their parent’s symptoms. Neither one lets a person say what they actually mean.

Describing depression, panic, or intrusive thoughts is hard enough in a first language. In a second language, the words that carry the real weight tend to be the first ones lost. Here the entire visit happens in Vietnamese if you prefer: the questions, the explanation of what is going on, and the reasoning behind any medication.

There is also the part that has nothing to do with vocabulary. Shame about mental illness, worry about what relatives would say, the instinct to describe distress as a physical symptom because that feels more acceptable, the weight of what an older generation carried and never discussed. None of that needs to be explained from scratch here.

The whole visit in Vietnamese

Not a translated version of an English appointment. The evaluation, the explanation, and the treatment plan all happen in the language you think in.

No family member as interpreter

Your adult children do not need to take time off work, and you do not have to say difficult things through someone you love.

Anywhere in Oregon

Portland, Beaverton, Gresham, Hillsboro, Salem, Eugene. Secure video means the nearest Vietnamese-speaking prescriber is not a driving distance question.

Culture taken as context, not a barrier

Family obligation, immigration and refugee history, and generational silence around mental health are treated as part of the picture.

Quick answers

Questions from Vietnamese-speaking patients

Do you actually speak Vietnamese, or is this an interpreter service?

Alice Tran speaks Vietnamese and conducts the visit directly. There is no interpreter and no third party on the line.

Can my parent be seen even if they speak no English?

Yes. The entire appointment can be conducted in Vietnamese, including the intake questions and the discussion of any medication. Adult children are welcome to join if the patient wants them there, but they are not needed to translate.

Are the forms and paperwork in Vietnamese?

Booking and intake forms are in English, and help with them is available by phone at (703) 791-9099. Everything clinical, meaning the visit itself and the explanations, is in Vietnamese.

Will this be reported to anyone in the community?

No. Care is private and HIPAA-protected. Oregon visits are self-pay, so no claim is filed and no diagnosis is sent to a health plan. Nothing goes to family, employers, or anyone else without your written permission.

What does it cost?

The initial 60-minute evaluation is $400 and follow-ups are $200 for 30 minutes or $250 for 45. Oregon care is self-pay only, and the price is the same in either language.
