About this practice

A college town’s mental health, taken seriously.

Blacksburg is one of Virginia’s youngest communities, and the ages 18 to 25 that fill it are precisely when anxiety disorders, depression, ADHD, and bipolar disorder most often first appear or finally demand attention. Add the specific pressures of Tech life, engineering course loads, graduate stipends, tenure clocks, and being far from home for the first time, and the demand for psychiatric care far outruns what the New River Valley supplies.

Alice sees the Blacksburg pattern often: the sophomore whose high-school coping systems collapsed under a Hokie course load; the graduate student running on cortisol and cold brew; the faculty member whose "productive anxiety" stopped being productive; and the townies, the people who staff the restaurants and clinics and keep Blacksburg running, whose stress rarely gets a semester break.

Alice Tran is a dual board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC) treating adults 18 to 65 for anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, insomnia, and burnout, by secure telehealth anywhere in Virginia. Care continues through winter break and summer, as long as you are in the state, and most major insurance is accepted, with new patients typically seen within one to two weeks.

Students, 18 and up

Confidential care that does not touch your university record, scheduled around classes, with continuity across breaks anywhere in Virginia.

Grad students & faculty

Imposter feelings, advisor stress, and tenure pressure are real clinical loads. Discreet care from someone who takes them seriously.

Adult ADHD, evaluated properly

The two to three visit evaluation, not a same-day quiz, which matters in a college town full of stimulant shortcuts.

The NRV waitlist problem

Local psychiatric openings run months out. Telehealth closes that gap to about two weeks.

Your first appointment

What your first appointment looks like

Your first visit is a full psychiatric evaluation over secure video, about an hour: what brought you in now, your sleep, energy, mood and focus, your medical history, and what you have tried before. It is a conversation, not an interrogation, and you set the depth on anything difficult.

You leave with an initial diagnosis explained in plain language and a treatment plan you helped shape. Prescriptions go electronically to your local pharmacy the same day when medication is part of the plan, and the first follow-up lands two to four weeks later so treatment gets adjusted on real results.

Medication management

Medication management, statewide

Alice prescribes and manages the full range of psychiatric medications: antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD treatments, mood stabilizers, and sleep medications. Every choice is explained: why this one, what to expect in the first weeks, and which side effects matter.

Follow-ups run closer together while doses are adjusted and space out once you are stable. Partial improvement is treated as a signal to optimize, not a stopping point, and refill questions between visits get answered.

Supportive psychotherapy

Supportive psychotherapy included

Appointments include supportive psychotherapy: practical, evidence-informed work on the stress, thought patterns, and habits underneath the symptoms. For many patients, medication plus meaningful conversation with one clinician is exactly the right level of care.

When structured weekly therapy such as CBT or trauma-focused work would add value, Alice says so plainly and helps you find a therapist, then coordinates so both halves of treatment pull together.

Quick answers

Questions from Blacksburg patients

Can I use this instead of Cook Counseling?

They complement each other: university counseling is valuable for therapy but limited for psychiatric evaluation and medication management, which is what this practice provides. Coordination with your counselor is welcome.

Will my parents or the university see my records?

No. You are an adult patient; records are HIPAA-protected and shared with no one without your written permission.

What happens to my care over summer break?

It continues by telehealth as long as you are physically in Virginia. If you summer out of state, tell Alice early and appointments get timed around it.

Can ADHD medication be prescribed by video?

Yes, when clinically appropriate, after a proper multi-visit evaluation, sent to any Blacksburg pharmacy with the same monitoring as in-person care.

Do you take student insurance plans?

Most major plans are accepted, including Aetna and Anthem, which cover many student policies. Coverage is verified before the first visit.

I am faculty. How discreet is this?

Fully independent of the university: private practice, HIPAA-protected records, no waiting rooms, no campus involvement of any kind.

How fast can I be seen before exams?

Typically within one to two weeks. Book early in the semester when you can; symptoms rarely improve under finals pressure.

Is there crisis support?

This practice does not provide emergency care. For a crisis, call or text 988, contact New River Valley Community Services, or go to the nearest emergency department.
