Finding a psychiatric provider who speaks your language and understands your culture makes a real difference. Alice Tran, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner who provides bilingual mental health care in both English and Vietnamese (tiếng Việt) via telehealth, available to anyone across Virginia.
Book an AppointmentWhen it comes to describing how you feel, there are things that translate more naturally in your first language. Words for emotional states, family dynamics, cultural pressures, and the way anxiety or depression actually feels often do not have perfect equivalents across languages. For Vietnamese-speaking patients, working with a provider who speaks Vietnamese means being able to express yourself fully, without searching for the right English word or wondering if something was lost in translation.
Alice Tran grew up in the Vietnamese American community and understands firsthand the values, expectations, and family structures that shape how mental health is experienced and expressed in Vietnamese culture. She brings both linguistic fluency and cultural understanding to every appointment.
Appointments are conducted via secure telehealth video visit and are available to anyone in Virginia. You can communicate in whatever language feels most natural to you, in English, in Vietnamese, or a mix of both.

Mental health stigma remains a significant barrier in many Vietnamese families. Emotional struggles are sometimes seen as personal weakness, a failure of discipline, or a reflection on the entire family. Admitting to anxiety or depression may feel like letting people down, especially when so much has been sacrificed to give you opportunities.
Many Vietnamese Americans also carry the weight of intergenerational trauma without fully recognizing it. The experiences of war, displacement, refugee camps, and resettlement in a foreign country do not stay in the past. They shape the nervous systems, family dynamics, and emotional patterns of the people who lived through them, and of the children and grandchildren who grew up in their wake.
Alice approaches mental health care with respect for these realities. She does not dismiss cultural values or pressure patients to adopt a Western psychological framework. She works within the context of who you are, where you come from, and what your family and community mean to you.
Can I speak Vietnamese during my appointment?
Yes. Appointments can be conducted in Vietnamese, English, or a mix of both. Many patients find it helpful to switch languages depending on the topic. There is no requirement to communicate in English only.
Do you accept Vietnamese patients who are not comfortable with English?
Yes. Alice sees patients who prefer to communicate primarily in Vietnamese. Intake forms are in English, but appointment conversations can be conducted in Vietnamese.
Is telehealth appropriate for Vietnamese patients who may not be familiar with technology?
Telehealth visits are conducted via a simple, secure video link sent to your email or phone. Most patients find it easy to use. If you have concerns about the technology, you can call the office before your appointment for support.
Is mental health care confidential?
Yes. All appointments are strictly confidential and protected by HIPAA. Your health information is not shared with family members, employers, or community members without your written consent. Your privacy is legally protected.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. Alice Tran Psychiatric Care accepts Aetna, Medicaid, Medicare, Carelon, and Anthem BCBS Virginia. Self-pay is also welcome, and a superbill can be provided for out-of-network reimbursement.
