Psychiatric Care for Adults
in Gloucester, Virginia

Gloucester and the Middle Peninsula have always been a bridge away from everything, including mental health care. Alice Tran, PMHNP-BC ends that with secure telehealth: real psychiatric care, no Coleman Bridge required.

About this practice

The Middle Peninsula finally gets a shortcut.

For Gloucester, geography has always been the gatekeeper: specialty care means the Coleman Bridge and a Peninsula drive, or a long haul to Richmond, and psychiatric waitlists at the end of either. So the Middle Peninsula does what rural Virginia has always done: toughs it out, at a real cost measured in untreated depression, anxiety, and marriages and jobs strained past bending.

Alice sees Gloucester’s realities respectfully: watermen and trades families whose work rises and falls with seasons and fuel prices; commuters crossing to the shipyard or Peninsula hospitals; retirees who moved here for the quiet and found isolation inside it; and multi-generation households where caregiving falls hard on one or two sets of shoulders.

Alice Tran is a dual board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC) treating adults 18 to 65 for anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, insomnia, and burnout, entirely by secure telehealth for Middle Peninsula patients. Most major insurance is accepted, including Medicaid and Medicare, and new patients are typically seen within one to two weeks.

No bridge, no drive

Every appointment happens over secure video from home, with prescriptions to your Gloucester pharmacy the same day.

Watermen & seasonal trades

Income that swings with seasons breeds a specific anxiety. Practical care that respects how this economy actually works.

Rural isolation & retirees

Quiet can turn into loneliness, and loneliness into depression. Both are worth naming and treating.

Caregivers

The one adult holding a household of generations together needs care too, arguably first.

Your first appointment

What your first appointment looks like

Your first visit is a full psychiatric evaluation over secure video, about an hour: what brought you in now, your sleep, energy, mood and focus, your medical history, and what you have tried before. It is a conversation, not an interrogation, and you set the depth on anything difficult.

You leave with an initial diagnosis explained in plain language and a treatment plan you helped shape. Prescriptions go electronically to your local pharmacy the same day when medication is part of the plan, and the first follow-up lands two to four weeks later so treatment gets adjusted on real results.

Medication management

Medication management, statewide

Alice prescribes and manages the full range of psychiatric medications: antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD treatments, mood stabilizers, and sleep medications. Every choice is explained: why this one, what to expect in the first weeks, and which side effects matter.

Follow-ups run closer together while doses are adjusted and space out once you are stable. Partial improvement is treated as a signal to optimize, not a stopping point, and refill questions between visits get answered.

Supportive psychotherapy

Supportive psychotherapy included

Appointments include supportive psychotherapy: practical, evidence-informed work on the stress, thought patterns, and habits underneath the symptoms. For many patients, medication plus meaningful conversation with one clinician is exactly the right level of care.

When structured weekly therapy such as CBT or trauma-focused work would add value, Alice says so plainly and helps you find a therapist, then coordinates so both halves of treatment pull together.

Quick answers

Questions from Gloucester patients

Is telehealth as good as driving to a Peninsula psychiatrist?

For evaluations, medication management, and follow-up, outcomes are equivalent, and it saves the bridge, the gas, and usually about two months of waiting.

Do you take Medicaid and Medicare?

Yes, plus Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, and most major plans, verified before the first visit.

My internet is rural-grade. Will this work?

Visits run on cellular data fine, and if video fails, the appointment completes by phone rather than being rescheduled.

Can you coordinate with Riverside Walter Reed here in Gloucester?

Yes, with your permission: your local primary care stays local while Alice manages the psychiatric side, notes shared both directions.

How fast is a first appointment?

Typically one to two weeks.

Is this private in a county where everyone knows everyone?

Entirely: no waiting rooms, no local office to be seen entering, records HIPAA-protected by an independent Northern Virginia practice.

Do you treat seasonal depression?

Yes, including the winter pattern common in water-and-outdoor communities, with treatments beyond "get more sun."

What about emergencies?

Not a crisis service. Call or text 988, contact the Middle Peninsula Northern Neck CSB, or go to Riverside Walter Reed’s emergency department.
