Patient handout
Hydroxyzine
You have been prescribed hydroxyzine. This page explains what it is, what to expect, and when to call.
What it is
Hydroxyzine is a prescription antihistamine used for anxiety and for sleep. It calms within about thirty to sixty minutes and does not cause dependence, which makes it a non-addictive as-needed option. It is not a long-term treatment for an anxiety disorder on its own.
How to take it
- Take it as prescribed: as needed for anxiety, at bedtime for sleep, or on a schedule.
- Do not take more than the prescribed amount in 24 hours.
- It can make you drowsy for several hours. Do not drive until you know how it affects you.
- Avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines on the same day.
What to expect, and when
- It works within thirty to sixty minutes and lasts about four to six hours.
- Drowsiness is strongest with the first few doses and often lessens with regular use.
- For sleep, take it thirty to sixty minutes before bed. Morning grogginess is possible.
- If you need it most days, tell us. That usually means a daily medication or therapy would serve you better.
Common side effects
Drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, and constipation. Older adults are more sensitive to confusion and falls. Rarely it can affect heart rhythm at high doses.
Call the office the same day if
- Fainting, palpitations, or an irregular heartbeat
- Confusion, hallucinations, or severe agitation
- Trouble urinating or severe constipation
- Tremor, muscle stiffness, or unusual movements
- Rash, swelling, or trouble breathing (call 911)
Stopping
Hydroxyzine can be stopped at any time without withdrawal. If you have been taking it every night for sleep, expect a night or two of lighter sleep.
Good to know
- Tell us if you have heart rhythm problems, glaucoma, prostate enlargement, or take other medicines that affect heart rhythm.
- Hydroxyzine adds to the sedation of alcohol, sleep aids, opioids, and benzodiazepines. Do not combine them.
- If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, tell us.
